A mother from Tonbridge, Kent, found herself at the center of controversy after wearing what some deemed an “inappropriate” sundress to her son’s seventh birthday party. The 37-year-old mom sparked debate when she shared a TikTok video, filmed by her sister-in-law, showing her outfit choice. The clip quickly gained attention, drawing both criticism and support. While some felt her attire wasn’t suitable for the occasion, others defended her right to wear what she felt comfortable in.
At the party, all eyes were on Raquel Dicuru’s bold purple sundress. Her outfit choice quickly became the center of attention, sparking conversation among the guests. While some admired her confidence, others felt the dress was a bit too daring for the occasion. Despite the mixed reactions, Raquel stood by her choice, proving that personal style is just that—personal.
Negative comments flooded a reshared clip of her son’s birthday party because she captioned the post, “When you didn’t realize your b**bies were stealing the spotlight at your son’s birthday party until you saw pics and vid later that evening!”
Raquel, who works as an assistant ability consultant, shared the picture with a light-hearted intention. However, it quickly stirred up attention for all the wrong reasons. Many viewers deemed her sundress “indecent” for a child’s birthday party. The post gained over a million views, and while some appreciated her humor, others trolled her in the comments, accusing her of “trying to find a husband” with her outfit choice. Despite the backlash, Raquel’s post was meant to be fun, highlighting how personal style can sometimes spark unexpected reactions.
But Raquel was not fazed and slammed back at them, telling them to “get a life.” She shared yet another picture of herself in the same purple floral patterned sundress.
In a follow-up post, Raquel explained the situation, saying, “It was actually my sister-in-law who filmed the video, and none of us noticed anything unusual at first. It wasn’t until she sent me the clip that I realized, ‘Oh my god! My chest is completely visible!'”
She added, “Normally, I’m always adjusting my clothes, but this dress was super comfortable, so I didn’t even think about it. Plus, the angle played a part—she was filming from above, and I was crouching slightly.”
Raquel ended by saying, “We were all just caught up in the moment, singing happy birthday to my son, and I found it funny that none of us even noticed what had happened.”
Her light-hearted response adds context to the viral moment, reminding everyone that sometimes, things can be blown out of proportion.
“I posted it online because I thought it was funny and got a shock when I saw the reaction. Some of the people said my caption was drawing attention to my boobs. But that’s why it was funny.”
Raquel expressed her frustration that people seemed more interested in her appearance than the content she truly cared about. Sharing her disappointment, she said, “Of all the videos I’ve posted about litter picking and eco-living, which I really hoped would gain attention, it was this one that went viral.” Despite her focus on promoting environmental awareness and reducing waste, the viral video took the spotlight for the wrong reasons, leaving her feeling disheartened by the reaction.
She saw a lot of negative comments and saw that many thought she was seeking for attention with that clip.
Raquel shared how shocked she was by the backlash, saying, “People were outraged, questioning what kind of person I was, and some even speculated that I was looking for a husband. But I’m happily married and not searching for anyone.” She explained that most of the negative comments came from men, though some defended her, urging trolls to “lighten up.”
Raquel eventually had to delete many of the cruel comments, adding, “Men were accusing me of seeking attention, saying things like ‘Women know what they’re doing.’ It felt like I was being blamed for just existing.” She went on to say, “It seemed like these men were projecting their bad experiences onto me, assuming I wanted attention from the dads at the party, which was far from the truth.”
“They were saying I was making it all about me rather than my son. Someone said the fact I posted the video was “sick”. It’s just weird – why are people so angry? They’re just b**bs.”
Raquel opened up about how people made assumptions based on the video, stating, “People created their own story about what happened. But I don’t let it bother me too much—these people don’t know me. If they did, they’d realize I’m not like that.”
While the negative comments made her briefly question her outfit choices, she quickly realized, “No, they’re the ones with the problem, not me.” Raquel expressed frustration over how society reacts to something as natural as skin, adding, “Half the world has breasts, I don’t understand why it’s so taboo. It was a hot June day, and I was just wearing something comfortable for a picnic in the park.”
Despite the backlash, Raquel firmly stated she wouldn’t stop wearing her sundress: “I’m not indecent. I like to dress in a way that feels good for my body. No one should be shamed for what they wear or how they choose to express themselves.”
Some of the comments were rather harsh.
Raquel wasn’t without support, though. Many people came to her defense, with some pointing out that there was nothing wrong with the dress. One commenter questioned the backlash, saying, “Why is everyone upset? It’s just a basic sundress.” Another found humor in the situation, adding, “Wow, some of these comments. It’s funny, folks. Life happens, and they’re just breasts. Lighten up a little!”
A third person compared it to everyday beach attire, writing, “Sorry, don’t see anything wrong. If you go to the beach, you see a lot more skin.” The support she received made it clear that many thought the outrage was unnecessary.
