Rafael Pease planned a fun day snowboarding in the Chilean mountains to celebrate his 21st birthday with a friend. But during their adventure, he noticed what looked like a rock poking through the thick snow. As he got closer, he realized it wasn’t a rock at all—it was a horse, stranded and trapped deep in the freezing snow. Without a second thought, Rafael knew he couldn’t just leave her there. Watch his incredible journey to rescue the horse and see the kindness that turned his birthday into something truly unforgettable.
When Rafael spotted the stranded horse, he cautiously made his way over, keeping a close eye on his footing to avoid slipping in the deep snow. The horse was buried up to his waist, her legs trapped in snow that reached her belly, making it impossible for her to move. Later, he learned that she had been stuck in that spot for days, unable to free herself.
Seeing the horse’s desperate state, Pease and his friend immediately sprang into action. They used an avalanche shovel to dig around her, breaking through the thick, icy snow that had held her captive. Then, noticing how weak she was, they offered her some of their food, serving it to her in the shovel itself. The hungry horse ate gratefully, clearly exhausted from her days stranded on the mountain.
To bring her to safety, they crafted a makeshift harness with a rope, gently guiding her down the snowy slope. Riding on their snowboards, they moved slowly, carefully, and made sure she kept up. Days later, they learned that this poor horse had endured four grueling days in the bitter cold making her rescue even more extraordinary.
After the rescue, the horse was returned to his owner, who had released him to roam freely in his later years. Pease shared that he couldn’t bear to leave the elderly horse to perish in the harsh mountains. Although he gave up what would have been the best powder day of the year, Pease said every moment was worth it, as he spent the day digging tirelessly to free the horse from the snow. It was a choice he wouldn’t change, knowing he gave the animal a second chance at life.
